The formula is total cost ÷ (1 − target margin). The quote is rounded up to the next cent so rounding does not undercut your target. Gross profit and margin use that rounded quote.

This is an estimate, not an invoice. Sales tax is excluded. Overhead, payment fees, marketplace fees and costs you have not entered are not automatically included. Gross profit is not net profit.

Plan the boxes. Then price the whole job.

A quantity-only calculator tells a homeowner how much tile to buy. This tool helps a seller work out what to charge: it includes the cost of every full box, delivery / other costs and labor, then prices the project to a target gross margin.

How the calculation works

  1. Area including waste = project area × (1 + waste allowance ÷ 100).
  2. Boxes to order = area including waste ÷ coverage per box, rounded up to a whole box.
  3. Tile material cost = boxes to order × cost per box.
  4. Estimated total cost = material cost + delivery / other costs + labor cost.
  5. Quote before tax = total cost ÷ (1 − target gross margin ÷ 100).
  6. Gross profit = quote − total cost. Gross margin = gross profit ÷ quote × 100.

Worked example: a 500 sq ft project

With 10% waste, you need 550 sq ft. At 15.5 sq ft per box, order 36 boxes, covering 558 sq ft. At $32 per box, materials cost $1,152. Add $150 for delivery / other costs and $600 for labor: total estimated cost is $1,902.

To reach a 35% gross margin, divide $1,902 by 0.65. Rounded up to the next cent, your quote is $2,926.16 before tax, leaving $1,024.16 gross profit.

Margin is not markup

A 35% markup on $1,902 produces a $2,567.70 quote, but only a 25.93% gross margin. A 35% margin means you keep 35% of the selling price as gross profit, so you divide cost by 0.65 instead of multiplying it by 1.35.

What if I only sell materials?

Set labor to 0 and enter any freight, delivery or other project costs you bear. Include costs once: if your cost per box already includes inbound freight, do not add it again under delivery.

What is excluded?

Tax is excluded by default and is not calculated here. Overhead and selling fees are included only if you add them to your costs; percentage-of-revenue fees are not modeled by this tool. For online marketplace fees, use the platform comparison calculator or Reverse Pricing Calculator.

If all costs are zero, the quote and profit are zero and gross margin is shown as N/A because there is no revenue to divide by.
